Persistence Wears Resistance

Persistence Wears Resistance

"Persistence wears out resistance, or at least that's what protesters say." - Tarik Minor

In the past two days I’ve read a book, watched a movie, and heard good news from friends that they finally got what they wanted – one got a new job…another locked in a date with a girl.

A common thread running through each of these was the value of persistence.  It seems the power of persistence really does wear down resistance

OneMoreStep Thought For the WeekOften times our own ideas, goals, aspirations, and desires don’t align with the current circumstance, people, or obstacles that stand in our way…but persistence, if practiced professionally and in the right way, really does wear down resistance.
RESISTANCE

Seth Godin illustrates in his best selling book, Linchpin, that resistance is the cross section where Could Have, Should Have, & Would Have overlap.  He says resistance comes from our “lizard brains”, the mentality of playing it safe so we don’t stir the pot…making excuses for not going forward with something…afraid what “they” will say or think…

Resistance comes in all shapes and sizes…any of these familiar?

·      The boss that refuses to listen to our suggestions
·      Those coworkers that continue to slack and refuse to be team players
·      That #1 seed girl or guy that doesn’t seem to be nearly as interested in us as we are in them
·      The client that fails to see the value in our sales pitch
·      The judge that doesn’t see our side of the story
·      The student that refuses to study or give his or her all in learning new material
·      The people on our teams, as leaders, which insist, “they’re right…and we’re wrong.”

When met with resistance of any kind, whether it is one of the above scenarios or our very own “Lizard Brains”…we have two choices.  We can quit and give up at the first sign of adversity (or resistance), OR we can be persistent

Being persistent doesn’t necessarily mean being pushy.  That gets us in trouble pretty quickly.  Pleasant persistence, put to practice in professional, respectful ways is what creates value, fosters relationships, and results in that spark…that magical connection when everyone wins.

So when you’re met with resistance this week, this month, and for the rest of the year, remember that persistence wears resistance.  If you feel passionate about the topic, the initiative, the opportunity, or the goal, even when it’s the unpopular direction…DON’T GIVE UP.  It may be a StairMaster opportunity to meet them where they are, spend some time engaging in healthy conversation, and you just might walk back up the steps together.

As long as we strive to do the right thing, at the right times, for the right reasons, in the right ways…Persistence can be the OneMoreStep that ultimately makes the sale, convinces the boss, influences the stubborn coworker, and/or inspires our students or teams.

No matter what the resistance, whether it comes from our own hesitation or external factors outside of our control, we should...stay the course, play our game, remain steadfast, and persistently pursue the emotional, physical, and relational outcomes we desire.

So Go OneMoreStep…be pleasantly PERSISTENT…

Two for the road…

I went to see Moneyball this weekend, a movie inspired by the Michael Lewis book originally published in 2003, staring Brad Pitt and Jonah Hill.

The book and movie are based on the true story of how Oakland Athletics General Manager, Billy Beane, used a new, different analytical, “sabermetric” approach to assembling a competitive major league baseball team.  Much to the surprise, dismay, and resistance of Billy’s staff of scouts, assistants, coaches, and manager, Billy stayed the course.

Billy was persistent in using stats and metrics such as on-base-percentage and slugging percentage as better indicators of offensive success than the common, mainstream stats such as stolen bases, runs-batted-in, and batting average.  This strategy would allow them to be competitive, despite financial constraints with a limited payroll.

Billy’s strategy was met with so much resistance that he had to make bold moves, trading players who were making strong contributions but just didn’t quite fit the new system.  He was forced to have many tough conversations with members of the media, the organization, and especially the team’s manager who refused to buy into the system.

Billy’s persistence paid off, as the 2002 Oakland Athletics won as many games as the mighty New York Yankees.  The Oakland Athletics, at one time during that season, won 20 games in a row, a winning streak that broke a long standing Major League Baseball record.  They did it with a $41 Million payroll…vs. the $125 Million payroll of the New York Yankees…and they achieved success with a strategy that was first met with resistance, but ultimately accepted in the end…

Persistence wore down resistance for Billy Beane…

Up, Down, or Sideways – a timely, inspirational book by Mark Sanborn

Mark Sanborn was kind enough to share his new book, Up, Down, or Sideways with me; the book went on sale over the weekend.  As the OneMoreStepRevolution community knows, I love Mark Sanborn’s books, The Fred Factor, You Don’t Need a Title to be a Leader, and The Encore Effect.

His latest book is a comprehensive strategy which includes what he calls – 3 Mindsets and 6 Methods that, if practiced with persistence, allow us to be successful no matter if times are up, down, or sideways.

Mark gives us great illustrations, examples, and stories to back up the lessons and pearls of wisdom that will not only make us successful, but also allow us to develop key relationships, produce lasting value, and continually innovate for our organizations and ourselves.  However, merely buying into the concepts and mindsets doesn’t quite get us there…it’s when we persistently practice the things we’ve learned along the way, parlayed with the tools that Mark offers in his book, that ultimately allows us to succeed when times are up, down, or sideways.

The book left me with a feeling of HOPE and INSPIRATION...and motivated to continue my journey for success and fulfillment, doing the right thing...with persistence...

“…persistence turns productive behavior into positive habits…” – Mark Sanborn, Up, Down, or Sideways

Have a great day.

FRED Friday...Meet Amy, the Miracle Fred

FRED Friday…Meet Amy, the Miracle Fred
Left: Becky Springer...Right: Amy Otto

Last week Mark Sanborn received an email from Mr. William (Bill) Mulcahy regarding a FRED Friday nomination - Amy Otto.   Mr. Sanborn forwarded it to me, and I immediately wanted to share it with the OneMoreStepRevolution community.

Attached to Mr. Mulcahy’s email was a newspaper article from the Dunwoody Crier, a Dunwoody, GA newspaper that printed a full story about how Amy Otto, our featured Fred, saved her friend, Becky Springer’s, life.

While I’ve never met Mr. Mulcahy, I’m glad to hear that he reads the OneMoreStepRevolution blog, and I’m even more thrilled that he and Mr. Sanborn reached out to me with what is a very touching Miracle Fred story, to say the least.  I hope it inspires you as it has certainly inspired me.

First, meet Becky Springer…

Becky Springer became very ill in February of 2008 as she contracted a rare bacterial infection, Haemophilus influenzae Type b, a disease for which adults are not commonly at risk.  The terrible infection caused Becky’s organs to shut down and eventually led to septicemia, a serious, life-threatening condition caused by bacteria in the blood.

Becky’s kidneys went first, she suffered a stroke, and doctors were forced to amputate her hands and feet just to keep her alive.  She later spent six weeks at the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago, where she regained her strength and learned to walk with prosthetic feet.  Her twenty-four hour kidney dialysis was eventually reduced to three times per week, which she continued after returning home to Atlanta.

The Dunwoody Crier newspaper article talks about Becky’s amazingly positive attitude even after her amputation…she said, “When I woke up and learned they had cut off my hands and feet, God had instilled in me peace, comfort, and patience.  I felt calm and at peace in my heart.”

By early 2009, adjusting to her “new normal”, with prosthetic hands and feet, Becky was placed on the kidney transplant list through the Piedmont Hospital Transplant Institute.  Time passed…more time passed…and still no suitable donor was found among Becky’s family, friends, or anonymous potential donors…

Then…Amy Otto joined Becky’s book club…

Amy Otto met Becky Springer when they both joined the same book club just outside of Atlanta.  Amy told the Dunwoody Crier newspaper what motivated her to consider donating one of her kidneys to her friend Becky, “She’s everything I am – a wife, a mother, a sister…but she has all those challenges.  She’s smart, funny, and a go getter.”

After extensive research and with the support of her husband and two teenage children, Amy made the decision in April of 2011 to pursue the opportunity to be Becky’s donor. Amy told the Dunwoody Crier newspaper, “I made up my mind…I’m going to do this.  I could enhance someone’s life.  I didn’t see a downside.  I tell my kids, ‘If you can enhance someone’s life it’s a wonderful thing’.”

She confided in Paul Springer, Becky’s husband, and together they forged ahead with the series of health and physiological tests necessary for potential donors.  (To avoid potential disappointment, Becky was kept out of the loop during the testing.)  In order for transplants to work, living donors not only have to be in excellent physical health, but their blood types must also be compatible with that of the recipient’s; in addition, the recipient must test negative for antibodies in their blood that may reject the donor kidney.

Despite the odds, Becky tested negative for antibodies and Amy’s blood type was a match…doctors at Piedmont Hospital were optimistic, and on June 3rd, earlier this summer, kidney transplant surgery was performed with donor (Amy) and recipient (Becky) in adjoining operating rooms.  Each friend now has one fully functioning kidney.

Becky’s touching quote in the Dunwoody Crier newspaper article read, “I prayed for someone to give me a kidney…I believe God picked Amy and said this is what you’re going to do…it literally was a miracle.  The doctors couldn’t believe someone just walked in to be tested and it was a match.”

The cool part…

Amy says that when she sees Becky it warms her heart.  When people call her a hero, Amy insists that she is not…but Becky is the hero because, “she’s taken lemons and made them lemonade.”

This story opened my eyes in a couple of ways.

1)   Of all the OneMoreSteps and OneMoreStep Moments…what could be more impactful than sacrificing something of your own to save another’s life? Amy gives new meaning to my OneMoreStep mantra – “when you think you’ve done enough, go OneMoreStep”.  FREDs like Amy Otto prove that we can always do MORE…we can always go OneMoreStep.

2)   Hearing Becky’s story…realizing the challenges that she faces and the life-threatening obstacles she and her family have overcome since February of 2008…I realize that my challenges, my “lemons” not only pale in comparison to hers, they really aren’t challenges at all.  I’m reminded this week that rather than complain, worry, and dwell on circumstances or people that frustrate me, I should focus on the good stuff.  Philippians 4:8 comes to mind.

Thank you, Amy…for proving that no matter what the situation, we can always do MORE…we can always go OneMoreStep to “enhance someone’s life”.

Thank you, Becky…for inspiring us all to have faith, stay positive, and to remember that if God gives us lemons, we should make lemonade…we should all be more like you.  You truly are a hero.

Thank you Mr. Mulcahy…for sending this story to our friend Mark Sanborn, whose best selling book, The Fred Factor is not only the inspiration for this blog, but also inspires so many of us to turn the ordinary into the extraordinary…and thanks to both you and Mr. Sanborn for reading and spreading the magic of the OneMoreStepRevolution...

Have a great day.

What is FRED Friday?

In my favorite book, The Fred Factor, Mark Sanborn tells an inspiring story of how a man named Fred goes OneMoreStep after OneMoreStep in his role as a Postman for the United States Postal Service.  I love this book.  Since my mom sent it to me in 2004, I've purchased the book for friends, coworkers, and girlfriends...I've even purchased and hand delivered copies of the book to several executives at both Wynn Las Vegas and The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas.

Fred Friday is a series in which the OneMoreStepRevolution blog will showcase a real life "Fred" on select Fridays.   Reading The Fred Factor definitely leaves us with a desire to to be more Fred-like ourselves, but I also love looking for FredsFreds are everywhere. I love it when I experience a real life Fred.  I'm inspired just as I am every time I re-read the book.  I thought it would be fun to spread the magic of Fred to our OneMoreStepRevolution community.

OneMoreStep Moments

One More Step Moments

It’s easy to say the right thing, do the right thing, and put in the “extra effort” when bosses, coworkers, partners, clients, students, friends, or acquaintances are around.

What about those me, myself, and I moments when we’re the only ones around?

OneMoreStep Thought for the week: Who are we when nobody’s looking?  What do we do when we’re all alone…do we do the minimum, just to get by or go through the motions so we can merely check things off the list?  Or do we go OneMoreStep, put in the extra effort, and nail the details, so we crush it for our boss, our coworkers, our clients, our guests, our students, and/or our family?

We all have them…those moments when we’re all alone in our office, classroom, living room, at the gym, in the car, or when we're by ourselves…yet we have what seems to be a little black cloud hanging over us.  That little black cloud represents the project our boss just gave us, the email we know we need to write or phone call we know we need to make that will likely be met with certain levels of consternation by the receiving party; maybe it’s when we're on the second set of an exercise at the gym – do we stick it out and finish strong with the third set or mail it in and quit early?

Do we pick up the phone, face the music, and have difficult conversations when opportunities present themselves or do we take the easy way out and hide behind a vague, ambiguous email?  These are what I call OneMoreStep Moments.

Often times, others may not even recognize when we go OneMoreStep, but should that stop us from doing so?  We could just as easily skip the third set of an exercise or the last five minutes on the treadmill at the gym, and nobody would ever know the difference…but we would know.

In a pinch, we can send a quick, impersonal email versus planning for a well thought out, in-person and meaningful conversation, but which would be best for the relationship?  Our bosses may not tell us to get in early and prepare the extra ten, fifteen, or twenty minutes for our meetings, classes, or projects…and if we don’t put in the extra time will they ever know?  Maybe not, but should that keep us from going OneMoreStep?

OneMoreStep Moments define us.  These moments separate the leaders from the followers.  Often times it’s not what we do when others are around – in the meeting in front of the boss, in the classroom in front of the students, or at the kitchen table in front of the family.  Instead, what we do behind the scenes preparing, studying, training, practicing, perfecting, learning, and sacrificing our own time for the betterment of the team, the group, the community, or the family can be the very OneMoreSteps that make the difference.

In school those OneMoreStep Moments were the difference between getting a “B” and getting the “A”.  In sports those OneMoreStep Moments, sacrificing and preparing when nobody else is around, win championships.  In life those OneMoreStep Moments, taking the extra time to plan, prepare, serve, and lead others simply because it’s the right thing to do rather than doing so for personal gain or recognition can be the difference between merely making a contribution and truly being an inspiration that could change someone's life or career…

So next time you find yourself alone…at your desk, on your couch, in your car, or at the gym…with a decision to make – to go OneMoreStep...or not…do the right thing.  Embrace OneMoreStep Moments, and think of them as your chance to play like a championget the “A” in life…make a difference that matters for somebody…and make yourself an indispensible part of your team in the process.

When you think you’ve done enough…go OneMoreStep…

Have a great day.

FRED Friday...Remembering 9-11 Ten Years Later

FRED Friday…Remembering 9-11 Ten Years Later

In lieu of FRED Friday today, I wanted to take a minute to remember 9-11-01…ten years later.

OneMoreStep Thought for the Week:  Take time to stop, smell the roses, and embrace the relationships that mean the most to you.  As we learned on that tragic day ten years ago…life has no guarantees.

What we have today can be taken away from us tomorrow without a moment's notice.  So live for today, and embrace the relationships, friendships, and people that mean the most to you, TODAY; and every day.

This weekend Americans as well as citizens of the world will be reminded of the tragic events of September 11th, 2001.  We’ll all reflect on where we were that day, what we were doing, and the array of thoughts, feelings, and emotions that shot through our hearts and minds like a bolt of lightening.  September 11th is a day unlike any other day.  Some lost family, friends, and love ones who were working in the towers.  Others in the NYFD and NYPD lost their lives trying to save the innocent people.  Friends, families, and loved ones of those caught up in the fury at ground zero were left in shock…and our hearts went out to all involved as we watched and listened to the news.

Remember where you were…remember the thoughts that raced through your mind…remember the people you immediately thought about…remember the relationships that instantly came to mind…

I was in my first week of training as a Front Desk Manager at Disney’s Contemporary Resort.  At around the 9am hour, I was with one of the Bell Services Managers, learning that operation.  I remember being in complete shock, as both Guests and Cast Members were slowly but surely realizing the magnitude of what had just happened.

I was 22 years old, fresh out of college, and a bundle of nerves as it was.  I remember the feeling I had as a coworker and I were asked to lower the American flag to half-mast.  The iconic, storied Disney’s Contemporary Resort was always one of my favorite resorts of all time (with the monorail running through the middle of the A-framed structure)…and here I was lowering the American flag on September 11th, 2001.  It was surreal to say the least.

I remember the flood of thoughts, feelings, and emotions as I began to realize the impact of the events that just transpired.  I first thought about my family in Kentucky – were they ok?  I remember stepping backstage to call my dad…confirmed my family was ok.  Check.  Next, I thought about my friends…from high school, college, and several that I had met only a few months prior.  Were they ok?  A few emails internally to the Disney folks and some close friends from college confirmed that they were ok.  Check.
Been wearing the Old Glory cuff links every day this week

I think I’ll remember that evening of September 11th, 2001 as well as the days/weeks that followed, for the rest of my life.  Remember the feeling?  The people you thought about when you first heard the news and the people with whom you surrounded yourself in the days and weeks following were certainly the most important people in your life.  At least they were to me.

The night of September 11th, I can remember hosting several people to my apartment.  We were inseparable for weeks, months, and in many ways we still are to this day.  My friends and I were close to begin with, but from that day forward we shared thoughts, feelings, and emotions with one another that brought us even closer together.  We wore American flag pins on our lapels at work, at home, and each night we went out together…for the remainder of 2001.
These guys are FREDs - Late September 2001...we were inseparable

Remember the relationships that either formed or were strengthened ten years ago when those planes hit the towers.  I often think about those very relationships and friendships that meant so much to me then, and how fortunate I am to still have those people in my life today.

I think I’m so close with so many of my friends to this day because we all realized just how much our relationships meant to each other on September 11th.  As the darkest of thoughts crept into our hearts and minds, we began to think – What if something happened to him or her?  What if all of a sudden they were gone?  How much would we miss them?

It sounds deep, but isn’t that the beauty of relationships and friendships that matter?  We care about them.  We laugh with them.  We love them.  We are there for them, and they are there for us.  As we all go through this weekend, Remembering 9-11…remember the relationships that matter to you…TODAY.  If we look at the big picture, we can quickly set aside petty differences and focus on the good stuff.  Embrace the relationships that matter to you.  Love them.  Show them.  Tell them how much they mean to you…and simply enjoy every minute.  As we learned 10 years ago, there are no guarantees…who knows what can happen tomorrow…

So live for today…embrace the people and relationships that mean the most to you.  When you think you’ve embraced them enough…go OneMoreStep, and show them just how much you value their friendship.

Remember…Never Forget…9-11-01

Kitchen Table

Kitchen Table
the very table from my childhood is in my apartment in Las Vegas

One of my best friends and country music artist, Chuck Wicks, wrote a song recently entitled “Kitchen Table”.  Like most of Chuck’s songs, it has a catchy tune, a great hook, and passionate lyrics.

This song struck a chord with me (pun intended), and it reminds me of how I grew up with a loving family in eastern Kentucky.  Suppertime was family time…TV off…napkins on laps…and a time to practice your manners over some good old fashioned, quality time at the kitchen table.

My mom and dad both worked hard so that my sister and I could have life experiences, material things, and most importantly a solid foundation of moral values.  The life experiences – vacations, travel, and basketball camps were great.  The material things – basketball goal and pool in the backyard, clothes, and a new car when I turned sixteen were also very nice…but some of the most valuable life lessons and cherished memories of my childhood and adolescent years come from sitting around the kitchen table.

OneMoreStep thought for this week – Don’t underestimate the importance and the impact of making time for family, friends, and loved ones around the kitchen table

The meaningful time spent with those you love, the conversations that strengthen relationships, and the lessons learned in the process are all a collective OneMoreStep that our parents, our children, our friends, and the objects of our affection will cherish long after the vacations are over and long after the material possessions have gone out of style.

We all have agendas.  We all have timelines and deadlines.  We all have those things hanging over our head that consume our every thought.  Sometimes it’s hard to make time for our family…our friends…our loved ones.

However, we should ask ourselves - if we check that email in an hour instead of right now…or if we finish up that project in the morning rather than tonight…or if we spend the extra money to fly home for an additional visit with the family instead of buying that new tv…so that we can enjoy quality time and meaningful conversation with the people that mean the most to us - Will we make an impact?  Will work be ok without us for a few minutes, a few hours, or a few days?  I think so…  Will our family, our friends who may need a shoulder to cry on, or our loving significant others enjoy our company way more than our company will ever value our overachieving efforts at work?  Absolutely…

Five years from now…ten years from now…and twenty years from now…which will be more meaningful and fulfilling? – The fact that we really crushed it in our careers OR the lasting memories we will have made with the people we love – our closest friends, our family, and the loves of our lives?

Wherever yours may be and whomever you may have sitting around it…don’t underestimate the valuable lessons, quality conversations, and the loving relationships that can be formed at that kitchen table

Two for the road…

THANKS Mom & Dad…

If your parents always figured out a way to gather the family around the kitchen table, and if you’re taking a look back and realizing how much that meant to you and/or how much you cherish both the memories and the lessons learned around that kitchen table…go OneMoreStep and tell them how much it meant to you then and how much it means to you now.

To my Mom & Dad – thanks for always making time for quality conversations around the kitchen table growing up.  Dad would work late into the evenings at his office, but first he would always make time for dinner around the kitchen table.  Mom would be up at dawn, get us ready for school, go teach school, make sure we were picked up and dropped off at the appropriate practice or sporting event…and then not only make sure food was prepared, but she also taught us many lessons around that kitchen table.

Chuck Wicks – “Kitchen Table”

“It’s a long road, if ya don’t know where you’re going…it’s a hard ride, if ya ain’t got family…take the good advice…and the sweet tea from your mama…and the stories that will make ya…and the prayers that will save ya…sit’n ‘round the kitchen table…” – Chuck Wicks

Thanks, Charles, for another beautiful song, with moving lyrics to those of us that learned so much sit’n around that kitchen table.   I love ya, fella…and couldn’t be prouder of you.  See you soon.

Enjoy – “Kitchen Table” by one of the best guys you'll ever meet, my buddy Mr. Charles Elliott Wicks…

FRED Friday...Meet "V", the DAY CHANGER

FRED Friday…Meet “V”, the Day Changer
Meet "V", the Day Changer

Earlier this week, bright and early Tuesday morning, I was walking to my office…feeling a bit tired, frustrated with a few things, and really quite anxious about several items on my To Do list.  I’ll admit…I was kind of dragging.

My colleague, Tom, and I were walking together through the backstage area where our banquet set-up team preps, stages, and organizes coffee breaks, roll-in lunches, etc for our meetings clients and Guests.

We were both nervous about rolling out a new initiative on the casino floor this week…we wanted everything to go well for our team, our executives, and especially our Guests.  We tend to put a good deal of pressure on ourselves…

At that moment, we happened upon “V”, the Day Changer

“V” was backstage preparing for what appeared to be a fairly significant banquet function.  I always see him doing his thing…backstage…on-stage…leading his teammates…and always working with a smile.  Tom and I walked by “V”, and I gave him a quick nod and a, “Morning ‘V’…how are you, sir?”

“V” didn’t skip a beat, never looked up as he went about his work, and he replied, “…Life is beautiful…”

That three-word phrase stopped me in my tracks - Life is beautiful.  It was a Day Changer.

There I was feeling frustrated, wasting time and energy dwelling on things over which I had absolutely no control, and it undoubtedly showed.  I’m sure my anxiety and frustration would have continued to rub off on everyone in my path that day...but thanks to my friend, “V”, I quickly changed my tune.

In that moment, I remembered that one year ago I was staring unemployment dead in the eye.  I was sending hundreds of emails, applying for hundreds of jobs all over these United States, and getting nowhere…fast.  I would sit and think; dream, and wonder where I would end up or if I would ever find another job.  I didn’t have a clue what life had in store for me next…suffice it to say that God is good; because one year later here I am, blessed with a job again, and at least for the moment life is beautiful.

“V” reminded me this week that life is beautiful; if we choose for it to be.  We all have a choice.  We can either focus on the negatives, dwelling on things we can’t control…OR we can look for the positives, the good stuff and PMA the days – Positive Mental Attitude.

I would have continued through this past week with a negative outlook, which is how I started out.  However, my interaction with “V” on Tuesday was a Day Changer.  It changed my whole attitude toward my job, my meetings, my relationships at work, and my phone conversations with my family back home, and it certainly changed my mental approach to life.  “V” reminded me that life absolutely is beautiful, and sometimes the only thing preventing us from realizing its very beauty is our own attitude.

After my day changing interaction with "V" I changed my approach and outlook on everything.  Since that nice OneMoreStep moment I’ve smiled more often.  I’ve given out more hugs, hi-5’s, & handshakes.  I’ve had more fun.  I’ve laughed more, and I’d be willing to bet that I’ve made other people do the same.

Mark Sanborn says in The Fred Factor:

“…I believe that you change the world every day, whether you intend to or not.  Often it only takes a small act to make a big difference…

You also change the world of a coworker, a customer, a vendor, or a cafeteria worker with your smile or frown...

But who’s to say that these little changes don’t have accumulative, profound effect in the lives of others and, ultimately in your own life?”

The OneMoreStep thought I’m trying to highlight on this FredFriday is that we can all be Day Changers.  We should ask ourselves: “Do people feel better or worse after they have an interaction with us?”  “Are others inspired by our words and actions, or do we bring them down?”

Having a Positive Mental Attitude - a Life is Beautiful attitude like “V” can certainly be a Day Changer…it certainly saved me this week.

Thanks “V - Man”…keep being you my friend.  It moves people…it moves me.  I can't wait to be a Day Changer like you today.

Have a great day.

Taylor

FRED Friday...Meet Holly

FRED Friday…Meet Holly
Meet Holly...creator of fine Holly Pops, Cake Dots, & MAGIC

Several weeks ago a friend of mine at work sent me a text message, “you have to call me ASAP…I need to tell you something...”

When I called her she told me that she might have spotted a FRED in our valet booth at The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas.

I could almost “hear” her smiling through the phone as she told me about how this dynamic, enthusiastic young talent makes magic for people in her role as a Valet Booth Cashier.  I couldn’t wait to meet her myself.

This week I was walking through the casino, and I noticed a young lady in a valet uniform, almost bouncing as she walked by me, smiling from ear to ear…I knew it…this had to be Holly.  I stopped her and said, “…Is your name Holly, by chance?”  It was…and my friends, a FRED she certainly is…

Meet Holly…

Holly Merren’s job description probably says something to the effect of: Valet Booth Cashier – Responsible for coordinating the parking and retrieval of vehicles.  However, she goes OneMoreStep in many ways for her Guests, coworkers, and community.  She bakes what she calls “Holly Pops” and cake dots for her team in Valet and Bell Services, Hotel Operations, and many more lucky people in her family and community.
Yes, they're as good as they look

I tried one…or a few…they’re fantastic.  Picture a little tiny piece of cake on a lollipop stick.  They’re little bite-size pieces of complete goodness.  The neat part is that Holly designs them one…by…one…by hand, with various icings, sprinkles, and toppings…each individual Holly Pop is her own unique creation.

FRED moment…

I asked Holly why she bakes Holly Pops and so many other goodies for the team.  She told me it all started because she had so much free time on her hands, and she just wanted to use her time for something positive…for other people.  Baking came to mind.

So she taught herself how to bake and create these artistic, unique, and very tasty delights.  She then took it OneMoreStep, and started making them for her coworkers, her friends, and even folks in her community just because she thought, “everybody loves sweets…so it will make them smile and happy, if only for a brief moment…”  That, Holly told me, would make her happy.

“The valet runners LOVE them…they will eat one, go park a car, and come back and grab another one or two…it’s so fun.”Holly Merren…a FRED if I ever met one.

Her favorite part is spending hours decorating and designing the tops of the “Holly Pops” because people have more fun with them that way.

She decorates and designs them with everything from what she calls “cake flowers”, to fancy “marbelizations”, to mini birthday cakes, to spider web designs, to “Holly Pop” baseballs, to even a cake dot version of bananas foster rum cake…(I am now officially hungry).

Holly has developed such a passion for her newly found artistic ability to delight others with her “Holly Pops” that she has recently started to receive requests and actual orders for special occasions such as birthday parties and weddings.

She told me that she wants to start her own business and take it even OneMoreStep with a concept she’s calling Positive Chocolates, which will be her “Holly Pops” or Cake Dots with an uplifting quote and/or positive one or two liner tied to them.  Her reason for wanting to do such a thing:  simply to make a positive impact on people and make them smile.

I don’t know about you, but I call that making magic, and I love it.

It’s such a beautiful thing having a FRED-Sighting.  FREDs like Holly remind us that it really is more fun and fulfilling to do things for others.  Mark Sanborn says in Chapter 6 of The Fred Factor:

Add “good stuff” – Think of your current position.  Is there anything you could do to your teammates’ or customers’ experience that would make their lives more enjoyable?

For many of us life and work get tedious.  We’re often frustrated with things beyond our control, yet we choose to sit and dwell on them, talk about them, and think about them.  I’m guilty of this one lately.  We should be more like Holly and focus on adding “good stuff” to the people in our lives. It's amazing how every single time we take the focus off of ourselves and focus on doing things for others life becomes more fun...and we become much happier people in the process.

Holly – thanks for the “Holly Pops”, but more importantly thanks for reminding me what it’s all about…creating value for others and making MAGIC for people…early and often.

When you think you’ve done enough…go OneMoreStep.

Have a great day.

Taylor

What is FRED Friday?
In my favorite book, The Fred Factor, Mark Sanborn tells an inspiring story of how a man named Fred goes OneMoreStep after OneMoreStep in his role as a Postman for the United States Postal Service.  I love this book.  Since my mom sent it to me in 2004, I've purchased the book for friends, coworkers, and girlfriends...I've even purchased and hand delivered copies of the book to several executives at both Wynn Las Vegas and The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas.

Mr. Sanborn paints the picture of how Fred makes magic for his community by taking a genuine interest in making a positive difference for others despite being an ordinary man in an ordinary job.  However, Fred's impact and his legacy are nothing short of extraordinary.  I'll let Mark tell you the story below and in the book, but the key take away is this:

If Fred the Postman can put this much creativity and passion into putting mail in a box for a living, how much of an impact can we all make in our roles as Teachers, Students, Managers, Leaders, Directors, Vice Presidents, and Sales People?
Fred Friday is a series in which the OneMoreStepRevolution blog will showcase a real life "Fred" on select Fridays.   Reading The Fred Factor definitely leaves us with a desire to to be more Fred-like ourselves, but I also love looking for FredsFreds are everywhere. I love it when I experience a real life Fred.  I'm inspired just as I am every time I re-read the book.  I thought it would be fun to spread the magic of Fred to our OneMoreStepRevolution community.

Hopefully a few things will happen with the Fred Friday series:

1) Real Life Freds will be recognized when these stories make it back to them
2) Companies for which these Freds work will have some positive feedback
3) People will be inspired to go OneMoreStep just like the real life Freds
